Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway city is to formally get bilingual status in March.
Gaillimh le Gaeilge gave a presentation on the status and its benefits to members of the city council at a meeting last night. (11/1)
Spokesperson Iggy O’ Muircheartaigh told the council that independent research undertaken previously showed that the Irish language is worth 136 million euro to the city economy per annum.
In terms of tourism, the Irish language is worth 40 million euro per annum to the city and county.
A new steering committee will ensure Galway’s bilingual status becomes a unique selling point.
