The debut production took the world by storm, receiving critical acclaim on Broadway and in the West End, before going on to win four Tony Awards. Now, to mark its twentieth anniversary, The Beauty Queen of Leenane has come full circle, returning to Galway for a brand new production of the award-winning play.
This month, Druid present a new must-see production of the brilliantly subversive The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh, on the twentieth anniversary of its debut.
The production will tour nationwide, starting in Galway’s Town Hall Theatre before performing in Cork, Limerick and Dublin and then embarking on a tour of the US.
Set in the mountains of Connemara, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the story of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early 40s, and Mag, her manipulative, aging mother. Mag’s interference in Maureen’s first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific.
