Today, more than ever, short film is an integral part of the film industry. From debut filmmakers to established professionals, short film creators have myriad reasons for getting into and being passionate about shorts. For some it can be seen as a stepping stone into filmmaking, features or even advertising, for others as a proof of concept, while for many it’s just for the love of the craft and the challenges and opportunities afforded by the medium.

Alongside a panel of filmmakers and industry professionals we plan to discuss the importance of each of these reasons and the position that short film holds within audiences hearts, the broader cinematic landscape and filmmakers careers.

We welcome both filmmakers and the general public to join in the lively conversation.

Filmed over 10 years and covering a lifetime, Breaking Out is the story of singer and musician Fergus O’Farrell, an artist whose unique talent inspired a generation of songwriters and touched thousands of lives, even as his own was slipping away. Its pace matches the remarkable energy of its central character, a man whose pursuit of perfection, gift for friendship and capacity for love captivated all who met him. Breaking Out draws on decades of archival footage and contributions from an array of Irish musical talent. Jeremy Irons tells the unforgettable story of a man who found his release through music and his ever-changing band of musicians, Interference. Muscular dystrophy was Fergus’ earliest interference. First, he lost the strength to stand at the microphone. Then, his ability to play guitar and piano was taken away. Yet, through it all, he had to keep singing. When he could no longer travel, Fergus’ friend Glen Hansard and The Frames travelled to West Cork to help him finish the album he had been working on for 20 years. It was a final race against time before that great gift, his voice, was gone. This is the story of that voice, and Fergus’ fierce passion and dedication to his art.

As imaginative as the creative process it documents, this is a uniquely intimate journey through the inspiration, writing and recording of a PJ Harvey record. A collaboration between writer and musician, Harvey, and award-winning photographer Seamus Murphy. Seeking first-hand experience of the countries she wanted to write about, Harvey accompanied Murphy on some of his worldwide reporting trips, joining him in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Washington DC. Harvey collected words, Murphy collected images. Back home, the words become poems, songs, then an album, which is recorded in an unprecedented art experiment in Somerset House, London. In a specially constructed room behind one-way glass, the public – all cameras surrendered – are invited to watch the five-week process as a live sound-sculpture.

The three twenty-somethings cultivate their humanistic and revolutionary ideas. They live in an apartment where they have banned all technological devices and expressions of contemporary language, organizing independent study programs, in sharp contrast with their university courses, living without any rules or obligations, and planning to write a novel. The three live in harmony, fearlessly exploring their sexuality and mutual emotions in a relationship of love and friendship, until an attack by a fascist gang prompts their retaliation, in the name of the ideals they believe in. This tragic turn of events will challenge their convictions and reveal the contradictions of their relationship.
