In recognition of her achievements and immense impact on the culture and arts community in Galway City, Mayor of Galway City, Mayor Mike Cubbard presented the Mayor's Choice for the 2020 lifetime achievement award to Mary Coughlan outside the Town Hall Theatre Galway on Tuesday.
Mary, who originates from Shantalla, has shown tenacity and courage to overcome many hurdles in life to become one of the best female vocalists this island has produced.
Mayor Cubbard commented that “whilst there are many worthy winners, Mary has shown a personal resolve to overcome many obstacles to go on and carve out a career to be proud of. It gives me great honour to select Mary for this accolade and to thank her for her contribution to arts, music and culture in Galway"
On receiving the award, Mary said she "was honoured and humbled to be recognised in this way by the Mayor of her home city.”
Town Hall Theatre Director Fergal Mc Grath said '' we are delighted to see this wonderful recognition of Mary’s lifetime of achievements in music. Mary played a hugely important role, especially in the early days, in building Galway’s reputation as a city of music and culture, from her participation in the very first organising committee of the Galway Arts Festival to her many wonderful albums and stunning live performances in Galway and around the globe. Mary’s final live performance before the Covid-19 closure was at the Town Hall Theatre and we look forward to having her back again before year ends!’’
