They say comedy is all about timing. If that’s true, Galway Comedy Festival has really nailed it this year. With all restrictions due to be lifted midway through their week-long festival of fun (on Friday 22nd October) it looks like #GCF21 could be the party of the century, kicking off the roaring twenties with a feast of laughter.
Since the announcement of live indoor events reopening in early September, the organisers have combed the planet (well, mostly Ireland & the UK), to bring you the finest comedy talent available and in their price range, to make #GCF21 the first major Irish festival after all that unmentionable unpleasantness.
With 45 shows, over 7 days, and 80+ artists it looks like being a hell of a week. Nina Conti, Jason Byrne, Deirdre O'Kane, Ed Byrne, Reginald D Hunter, Shaparak Khorsandi, Ardal O'Hanlon, Steve Hughes, Andrew Maxwell, Kevin McAleer, Bobby Davro, Terry Alderton, Owen Colgan, Barry Murphy, Waterford Whispers News, Karl Spain, Glenn Wool, Enya Martin, DJ Ivan Brackenbury, Danny O’Brien and Lindsay Hamilton (IT GALZ) are just some of the over 80 comedians making their way west to the capital of comedy for seven days and fun filled nights of laughter.
The festival also includes all the usual craic around town with the return of Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience, the improvised silliness of the Stephen Frost Impro All Stars, an Irish debut for the TRIGGERnometry Podcast, mixed up local history with Open Top City Bus Tours and some cheeky afternoon shows. Plus, late night madness with The Dirty Circus late and loose in The Loft @ Seven and the festival institution that is Late Night KARLnival in Róisín Dubh hosted by Karl Spain. More acts will hopefully be added over the coming weeks.
Galway Comedy Festival is shaping up to be the first proper release of laughter after these dark days, so let’s welcome back live comedy with a bang. Festival Director Kevin Healy said: “We are genuinely thrilled to be back. We missed the buzz of bringing laughter to the city. Artists, support crews and venues were amongst the worst affected by the last 18 months. The events industry was first to stop and the last one back, after one of the longest lockdowns in the EU. But as the end approaches, we are all looking forward to welcoming you with open arms and warm smiles. We are working night and day with some of the best people in the business to deliver a fantastic experience for you. Bigí Linn.”
This year’s festival has been made possible thanks to the support of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media, Catherine Martin T.D., and Galway City Council’s marketing fund.
In line with current government guidelines, ticket holders at events up to and including Thursday 21 October must be immune (i.e. be fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID-19 within previous 6 months), or be accompanied minors (under 18). Please note physical distancing will no longer be in place at these shows and all attendees will be required to produce proof of immunity (vaccination cert or recovery cert) upon entry. In line with guidance and to keep everyone safe and sound, patrons will continue to be required to wear masks throughout their time in the theatre and we encourage patrons to continue to be respectful of each other’s space when moving about. Children under-18 who are accompanying adults do not need proof of vaccination or recovery.
From Friday 22nd October onwards, restrictions will likely be lifted and you may not need a COVID certificate to attend our events (so if you don’t have one, you can still book your tickets for shows from the 22nd onwards).
Subject to the current government roadmap proceeding as planned.
