Wake gives voice to female voicelessness

HANS CHRISTIAN Andersen’s The Little Mermaid was first published in 1837 and since then it has inspired countless adaptations in print, film, TV and theatre. The latest is Deirdre Sullivan’s dark west of Ireland spin on the story, Wake.

Wake received its world premiere at the Town Hall studio last week in a sold-out run directed by Mairéad Folan for her company, NoRopes. Sullivan interweaves two separate tales; one renders the familiar mermaid narrative through an Irish folk prism while the other is set in the present day and focuses on two sisters - Caitríona (Tara Breathnach ) and Mara (Orla Ní Thíobraide ).
